Synopsis

The Monk: A Romance is a gothic novel written by Matthew Gregory Lewis, an English writer of novels and plays, notable among them are The Castle Spectre, Tales of Wonder, The Bravo of Venice, and My Uncle’s Garret Window.

This novel narrates the story of a disposed child, Ambrosio who rises to become a celebrated Priest, end up with the steep fall when the evil in him explodes under the mask of being a priest, commits endless crimes and sins to the extent of raping and murdering his own younger sister. Through the characterization of Ambrosio, the author explore the controversial theme of a priest committing endless sins of sex, rape, poison, torture, nunnery, and moral degradation of all concerned.
