The Law Inevitable is a novel written by the Dutch novelist Louis Marie-Anne Couperus, one of the influential personalities of Dutch Literature. His contributions to the Dutch literary world were in many genres of novels, poems, short stories, fairy tales and sketches. Among his numerous works notable are A ribbon of poems, Williswinde, Eline Vere, Footsteps of Fate, The Hidden Force: A Story of Modern Java, and Ecstasy: A Study of Happiness.

The Law Inevitable narrates the story of Cornélie de Retz van Loo, a Dutch Divorcee of 23 years old who was seeking to start a new emancipated and culturally fulfilling life in Italy from an upper-class The Hague background.
