Synopsis

The Castle of Otranto is a novel written by Horace Walpole, an English historian remembered for initiating the literary genre Gothic novel and his notable other writings include Some Anecdotes of Painting in England, The Mysterious Mother and A Description of the Villa of Mr. Horace Walpole.

Manfred, lives as lord of the castle along with lady castle Hippolita, Prince Conrad and Princess Matilda. The lord of the castle is cursed by a prophecy which confirms by an accident leading to death of his son Conrad, who is about to marry Isabella. To avert his end, Lord plans to divorce Hippolita and marry Isabella which is supported by Friar Jerome of the monastery. Isabella escapes from The Castle and find shelter in the church which is aided by Theodore. Theodore is now under the death threat by the lord. Friar Jerome later learns that Theodore is his own son, and begs for his son’s life from the lord.

Matilda who is in love with Theodore, helps him to escape from his father. Meanwhile Frederic, father of Isabella appears to save his daughter. He falls in love with Matilda. Manfred and Frederic, enters a deal to marry each other’s daughter. Manfred knowing Theodore and Isabella meets in a tryst in the church stabs the women to death and shocked later that the woman is his own daughter. Theodore marries Isabella and they become Lord and lady of The Castle.
