Synopsis

Crime and Punishment is a fiction novel about mental anguish and moral dilemmas of a conflicted former student, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a Russian Author remembered for his most popular works like “The Idiot” and “The Brothers Karamazov”. The story was conceived by the author when he lost his fortune in gambling and was unable to lead a basic life.

Rodion Raskolnikov an ex-student in St. Petersburg plots and executes the killing of a pawnbroker and elderly woman named Alyona Ivanovna and her half-sister Lizaveta, an eyewitness of the murder.  Shaken by his own actions and in contrast to his plot for the crime for ransom, he flees with a handful of items leaving sizeable wealth. Though he has managed to leave without any evidence of his murder, he was obsessed over the murder.

While wandering in the streets, he finds an accident and save the victim named Marmeladov and take him to his house. He learns from Marmeladov, that her daughter Sonya has become a prostitute to support his family. Raskolnikov handover them the money remained with him.  In the coming days, he falls in love with Sonya and confesses to her about his crime. With Sonya’s love, he confesses his crime to the legal authorities and sentenced for 10 years imprisonment. In the end, he marries Sonya and regenerate his moral under her loving influence.
