The Shunned House

Synopsis

The Shunned House is a horror short story written by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, an American writer remembered for his horror fiction works, notable among them are The Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow Out of Time At the Mountains of Madness.

The protagonist and his uncle Dr. Elihu Whipple have been fascinated with an abandoned house, in which the members of the family died on mysterious circumstances. They also witness strange weeds grow in the yard. One day they could visualize yellowish vapour in the basement which resembles a human form in the floor. They decide to unearth the mystery and stays on the yard of the house with powerful arms to face if any supernatural creatures attack them.The protagonist witness his uncle begins tossing and turning and finally transformed into a monster. Within in seconds his uncle’s body dissolves and transform into multitude of faces resembling the members of the family who were dead in the house. He escapes immediately from there.

Next day morning he goes searching, but could not find his uncle’s body. Now he plans to kill the monster and dig a big hole and was waiting with five barrels of acid. In the night he could visualize a monster and trapped into the hole. He started pouring the acids and faints down after third barrel was poured. He wakes up and witness there are ashes found instead of yellowish vapor. He concludes the monster is killed now; however he could not save his uncle. After this incident this house was sold to another family and no further mysterious incidents found in the house.
