Second Variety is a science fiction short story about self-replicating robots written, by Philip Kindred Dick, an American Author who contributed to science fiction genre of literary world with his works such as The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, A Scanner Darkly and Second Variety to name a few.
This novel is set on the times of nuclear war between West and Soviet Union. The dangers of nuclear war are realized by both sides only after endless loss of human life. While Soviet Union was having an upper hand in the war, key people of UN forces flee to moon base and their engineers develop fighting robots called “Claws”, which can replicate themselves without human insight. Six years passed, the claws destroyed Soviet forces and start redesigns themselves, which even UN forces not aware of it.
In the preceding incidents narrate that the “Claws” have powered themselves to the extent which no longer human can control them. In fact the story end lines states that “Claws” started developing weapons to kill other “Claws”
