Synopsis

The Happy Prince and Other Tales is a collection of five stories written by Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer and dramatist remembered for his plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, A Woman of No Importance and his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

This book is collection of five stories written for children, which teaches morals, noble and kindness to be rendered to fellow human beings. The five stories titled as The Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend, and The Remarkable Rocket.

The Happy Prince: The prince now as a statue with smiling lips is not happy witnessing the poverty. He asks a swallow to remove the valuable things from his body and render them to the poor. Over the period his entire body is stripped and his heart breaks after the swallow is died due to heavy cold. In the heaven their selfless deeds are valued by the angel and they were made to live forever in the paradise garden.

The Nightingale and the Rose: A Nightingale sacrifices his life by dropping his blood on a rose to become red rose, which was asked by a girl from a student for love. When the student meets his girl with the red rose, she is not ready to love her, as she is attracted towards a person who gave her precious jewels. The student throw away the rose and came to the conclusion true love and sacrifice are never realized by greedy people.

The Selfish Giant: A selfish Giant owns a garden with full of flowers, but does not allow any children to play there by building a wall. One day he watched children has trespassed his garden and while he was trying to catch them, every one escaped except one boy who could not climb the tree. The Giant helps him to climb and thereafter his greed is gone and allows the children to play. On his death he was welcomed by the god and made to live in the garden of paradise.

The Devoted Friend: A rich miller exploiting his friend Hans for gardening against a promise that he will give him wheelbarrow. One stormy night Hans is going to fetch a doctor for sick son of miller. Hans dies in the storm and after his funeral Miller is in deep sorrow that he is unable to dispose the wheelbarrow now.
